Children of any age can be evaluated, including infants. Early diagnosis and treatment of allergies and asthma in children can prevent symptoms from worsening over time.
OIT gradually introduces small, carefully measured amounts of a food allergen to build tolerance over time. Every dose increase happens under medical supervision in our office, and the program is personalized to each patient. For many families it significantly reduces the fear of accidental exposures.
Allergy shots (allergen immunotherapy) train your immune system to stop overreacting to your triggers by delivering gradually increasing doses of the allergens that affect you. Over time, most patients see fewer symptoms and need less medication — the shots treat the cause, not just the symptoms.
Allergy shots treat environmental allergies like pollen, dust mites, and pet dander. Oral immunotherapy (OIT) treats food allergies by building tolerance to the food itself. Your allergist will recommend the right approach based on your testing results and goals.
Most patients do not need a referral to schedule an appointment. Some insurance plans (such as certain HMOs) do require one, so we recommend checking with your plan — or call our office and we can help you find out.
If allergy skin testing is planned, antihistamines need to be stopped several days before your appointment because they can interfere with results. Do not stop asthma medications or other prescriptions. When you schedule, our staff will give you specific instructions for your visit.
