Asthma Testing & Spirometry
Can I be tested for asthma?
Asthma is a disease of the bronchial tubes. Patients experience spasms or transient narrowing of the airway, swelling of the airway (inflammation) and extra mucus production. Spasm, inflammation and mucus accumulation leads to narrowing of the airway diameter and makes it harder for air to move in and out of the lungs. Allergies to pollen, dust, mold and animals are frequently triggers for asthma.
We can do allergy skin testing in the office, typically on your first visit, to help determine the triggers. We also do spirometry (breathing tests) in the office to help determine your lung function.
Spirometry (Breathing Testing)
Spirometry is a simple, noninvasive breathing test that measures how well your lungs are working. It helps diagnose and monitor conditions such as asthma, chronic cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, and other breathing disorders by measuring how much air you can breathe in and out and how quickly you can exhale.
The test is performed in our office and takes only a few minutes to complete. You will be asked to take a deep breath and blow forcefully into a specialized device while one of our trained staff members coaches you through the test to ensure accurate results. In some cases, the test is repeated after using a bronchodilator medication to determine whether your breathing improves, helping us diagnose asthma and guide treatment decisions.
Spirometry provides valuable information about your lung function and allows us to monitor your condition over time, evaluate your response to treatment, and make informed decisions about your care.
