Food Allergies

A food allergy occurs when the immune system mistakenly identifies a food protein as harmful, triggering an allergic reaction. Symptoms typically develop within minutes to a few hours after eating and can include hives, itching, swelling, eczema flares, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, wheezing, throat tightness, difficulty breathing, dizziness, or, in severe cases, life-threatening anaphylaxis.

Food allergies can occur at any age but often differ by stage of life. In infants, toddlers, and young children, the most common food allergies include milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, soy, and wheat. In older children and adults, peanut, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish are among the most common causes of allergic reactions.

At Warren Allergy & Asthma Care, we provide comprehensive evaluation through a detailed medical history, physical examination, allergy testing, and oral food challenges when appropriate. We help patients and families understand their diagnosis, determine which foods should be avoided, identify foods that can be safely introduced or reintroduced, and develop individualized management plans that fit their lifestyle. For patients interested in additional treatment options, we also offer oral immunotherapy (OIT), sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT), and Xolair® (omalizumab) when appropriate.
